Samsung Gear S4 Release Date, Price, Patent, Design and other Specifications

There is always excitement about the release of the latest Apple product, like the anticipated release of the Apple Watch Series 3 later this year. This year, however, that isn’t the only thing people are talking about.

Rumors are surfacing about what people can expect from Samsung when it releases its new Samsung Gear S4 Smartwatch. The smartwatch is expected to launch by the end of the year. It’s likely to be a substantial update from the Gear 3 smartwatch, but we won’t know for sure until more details are announced.

This is what we saw last year with the release of the Samsung Gear S3. The smartwatch had more sporty features and a bigger design. It had two versions, one leaning towards fitness buffs and the other to customers wanting a classy looking watch. Its additions included built-in GPS.

What’s in store for this year? Here is some of what people are saying.

Samsung Gear S4: Release date

Speculation is that the Samsung Gear S4 will be released in November, about when the Gear 3 was released in 2016. Its price is rumored to be around $600 USD. We may hear the announcement in August if Samsung tries to beat the announcement of the Apple Watch Series 3.

Samsung Gear S4: Patent clues

Talk is swirling about patents including a patent filed that hints the Gear S4 may have a curved screen similar to its phones with curved screens. The patent shows a thin strip of a display on the edge of the dial.

Another patent rumor is that the Gear S4 could be wirelessly powered via a smartphone case. It would rest on top of the case.

The case would have a USB-C port that would plug into a phone and take power that would be used to power the smartwatch. The smartwatch would sit on top of a conductive plate on the case.

A wraparound or flexible smartwatch? That’s another patent being talked about, but again there’s no confirmation we’ll see that with the Gear S4.

Now keep in mind just because Samsung filed for a patent that doesn’t mean you’ll see it on their next release. It’s just an idea of what may be coming. Remember there’s been talk about things like a virtual skin-based display that haven’t happened.

Samsung Gear S4: Bixby to help

Another question is whether the smartwatch will feature Samsung’s Bixby digital voice assistant that’s seen on the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus smartphones. Wareable.com is reporting that we may just see that. Again, though, nothing’s certain. We’ll have to wait and see if it will be Bixby or if Samsung will again use S Voice on its smartwatch.

Samsung Gear S4: More design talk

There’s talk of the next smartwatch featuring the Exynos 7 Dual 7270 chipset. What’s that mean? It could mean a smaller 4G LTE modem, but what about design?

If that’s included, it could mean a slimmer design than what we saw with the Samsung Gear S3. That could be good news to those who thought the S3 had too much bulk.

The new processor is also expected to be more energy efficient.

Samsung Gear S4: Other Specifications

The Galaxy Gear S4 is expected to feature 1.5 GB RAM and either 4 or 8 GB storage. We can expect to see a Corning Gorilla Glass S screen, giving the smartwatch durable protection, as well as rotating bezel protection. The phone will include features like email, message sensors, a GPS based speedometer, altimeter, accelerometer. Add on a heart rate monitor and a pedometer and more including a fast-charging 400 mAh Li-ion battery.

Stay tuned

Of course, all of this is just speculation. Hopefully we’ll hear soon what to expect from Samsung’s next smartwatch.
